The 2013 Atlanta Winter Ticket to Ride League will consist of eight sessions of play, held on alternate Monday nights beginning February 4 and ending May 13.
The cost to participate is $5 per player at the league's start, plus $1 per player per session paid at the time of play, for a total of $13.
The grand prize is one $50 Well Played gift certificate. The top two finishers in the league will be invited to an inter-location championship game, which will have a grand prize of one $25 Well Played gift certificate, with additional prizes provided by the other participating locations.
The league will be structured as a ladder-style tournament.
Ideally each game session will consist only of three player games. In practice four player games will be created to accommodate the number of attending players and the number of available game sets.
In the first session players will be assigned to games at random.
In the second and third sessions players will be matched with other competitors that have the same record, with preference given to first place finishes, then second place finishes, and so on.
After the third week players will move up and down the table hierarchy according to the following algorithm:
- Create three spots at each table
- Add additional spots to the highest ranked tables until there are enough spots for all players
- The winning players from the top three tables form the new top table
- The losing players from the bottom three tables form the new bottom table
- All unplaced winning players move up one table
- All unplaced losing and absent players move down one table
- All remaining unplaced players stay at their current table
- Move winning players from lower tables up to fill in any gaps (priority given to head-to-head winner in prior game, prior table ranking, present above absent)
- Move losing players from higher tables down to fill in any gaps
The winning player from the top table in the last week of play will be the league champion.
All currently available Ticket to Ride sets and gameboards will be used throughout the league. When assigning a game to a table preference will be given to those sets played least frequently by the table's players.
In the event that a player cannot be present for a weekly game, a substitute player may be designated. Once a substitute begins play, the replaced player may not participate in any games during any of that day's league sessions. A registered league participant may not serve as a substitute for another player.
A player may not designate a substitute during the final session of league play.
Games will be played in accordance with the rules of each individual Ticket to Ride game. When a player draws ticket cards, the other players may, if they wish, continue their turns while the drawing player makes his or her choices.
Schedule of play
Any player that does not begin play in a league game before 8:00 PM shall forfeit the session's match and be counted absent. If a game cannot be completed before the competition venue closes, the game will be considered interrupted. Tickets and end game bonuses will be scored as normal and the player in the lead shall be designated winner. Slow play with the intent of causing the match to fail to complete will be deemed unsportsmanlike conduct and will result in the offending player forfeiting the session's match.
The commissioner of the 2013 Atlanta Winter Ticket to Ride League is Dave Leach. The league commissioner reserves the right to enter the league as a player and compete for the league's prize. Should any conflicts arise between the commissioner and a player during the course of normal play, preference in adjudication will be given to the player. The above notwithstanding, the decisions of the league commissioner are final.
